"I along with my Labour Party colleagues voted in favour of this report because I believe the EU can and should be the means of securing gender equality across Europe. Gender equality and women’s rights were founding principles of the EU and on many issues women still look towards Europe for the vindication of their rights.
Because of inequality, women still earn less money than men for the same job; they can also face discrimination in relation to their pensions and often face a higher risk of poverty than men.
This is a very important and timely report. Progress on gender equality has been slowing in recent years and this report and the direction it gives our outlook in other areas is vital. We should look at all EU policies with female-tinted lenses; we should assess how EU policies will impact on women and what we can do better."@en1
