"Mr President, last month the number of women elected to our national Parliament at Westminster rose by a third. Female MPs now represent 29% of the House of Commons. This signals positive change and embodies the improvements that we have seen in recent years toward encouraging more women into civic and political life. This report does place focus on many important drivers for change: tackling domestic abuse and other violence against women, focusing on personal development and essential skills to empower women of their accord, and the need to support and work/time balance for young mothers. I fully support efforts to make next year, 2016, the European Year on Combatting Violence against Women – and we need a more proactive approach from the Commission to realise this. Neither I nor my Party believes that the EU should have the right to intrude on what are Member States’ responsibilities to uphold equality how they see fit. We fully oppose these efforts to promote singular strategies aimed at women only, and in equal measure we oppose the attempts to use the issue of women’s rights as a means of supporting abortion on demand."@en1
