"I voted in favour of this Joint Motion for a Resolution, tabled by all parliamentary groups. The purpose of this resolution was to call, as MEPs, for the European Parliament to have a formal role in the process of monitoring and commenting on the progress of the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (UNCRPD).
While the European Parliament is part of the EU Framework to promote, protect and monitor the UNCRPD across the EU, the Commission appears to be excluding Parliament from formally and meaningfully participating in the review process being carried out by the UNCRPD Committee.
The most significant proposals in the Resolution are the statement that the Parliament will respond directly to the CRPD Committee in relation to all questions in the List of Issues that it has competence over. The Resolution lists these. It also calls on the Commission to take Parliament’s views into account when it sends its own response to the CRPD Committee.
More than 13% of the population across Ireland are living with a disability. I voted in favour of this report because it is crucial for political representatives, as well as broader civil society and especially disability rights organisations, to be properly included in the review process."@en1
