"Today I voted in favour of the Report on Self-certification of importers of minerals and metals originating in conflict-affected and high-risk areas. The EU is behind the USA in finally dealing with this issue and at last we have arrived at a position where we can now make progress. The legislative outcome will now mean that negotiations will now take place with the Council. I voted in favour of mandatory conditions as against a voluntary code that some wanted. I voted for a proper due diligence regime that would apply and I voted to include all minerals, rather than just four as was originally proposed. While negotiations will now proceed, I believe that a strong position has been reached which will send a clear message that EU businesses must respect developing countries and the materials they import and make."@en1
