"Madam President, the Roma are one of the largest ethnic groups in the EU, and International Roma Day is without doubt an important opportunity to recognise the historic and persistent discrimination against them in Europe. Roma suffered hugely during the Holocaust, and were systematically persecuted, deported and killed. It is vital we recognise the suffering they endured and distance ourselves from the sickening comments we heard here this evening, which were nothing short of hate speech.
Today Roma continue to suffer discrimination in many ways, including in education, healthcare and housing, and in ignorance from MEPs in this Chamber. It is vital that all citizens have fair and equal access to provisions which are, after all, human rights. In Ireland, in some instances, the Roma community has been subjected to racism and violent threats. In 2009, Loyalist elements disgracefully intimidated, threatened and eventually forced Roma families out of their homes in South Belfast. Sinn Féin condemns these attacks in the strongest terms, and we continue to defend the rights of the Roma community in Ireland, in Europe and elsewhere."@en1
