"Madam President, I voted in favour of this annual report, which is an important part of the Treaties. Every year the Commission is asked to bring forward a report on the state of play in terms of the level of fraud that exists across the European Union.
One of the obvious examples of fraud, not just in Europe but worldwide, is of course the area of illicit tobacco. The global threat depriving Member States is close to EUR 10 billion every year in terms of lost revenue. Estimates put the potential figure of illegal cigarettes sold on the world market by 2017 at over 628 billion cigarettes. Ireland is a prime target for cigarette smuggling. In Ireland last year OLAF’s Operation REPLICA seized 130 million cigarettes.
If there is one key message from this report, it is the need for much closer coordination and cooperation between the revenue service, the customs service and the police and border authorities to make sure we get on top of this problem."@en1
