"Mr President, the EU Framework Directive on Waste, like so many outpourings of bureaucracy from these institutions, uses a one-cap-fits-all approach to the problem of waste disposal, despite the ways that different Member States have traditionally approached this subject. I am often asked both by constituents and journalists what impact the EU really has on my country, and I can think of no better example of the EU’s inflexibility than by highlighting the development of a new incinerator in Worcestershire in response to this directive. In these worrying times of austerity and public service cuts, I am appalled that Council tax payers where I live and work in Worcestershire and Herefordshire have been saddled with a project lifetime cost to the tune of GBP 1.6 billion. There can be no doubt that this incinerator will become an enormous financial burden to my constituents."@en1
