"Mr President, I have enjoyed this debate here this evening. I think it is a very good debate because there is little doubt that the horsemeat events and the scandal of 2013 did rock consumer confidence and confidence in the processing industry. Consumers felt rightly cheated, and the honest meat producers were totally undermined. I remember at that time going to visit the local butcher’s shop and what they were experiencing at that time was an increase of over 20% in people going from supermarkets to the local butcher’s shop where they actually felt they were getting what they were promised. Now I have to say to people: if you believe the advertisements of the supermarkets, that you can get four hamburgers for a pound, do not be surprised if what you were promised is not actually there. So, you know, there is also another aspect to this. We should not allow the large supermarkets to tell us these things or to browbeat those in the processing industry to provide them with the loss leaders that force people to do these sorts of things. Now the horsemeat scandal had nothing to do with that. That was pure corruption. People out to destroy the industry. People changing meat on computers. The meat never moved! It was done on computers. It was a ridiculous situation that never, ever should be allowed to occur again. But let us have common sense and let us try and get a system that is not overly costly but will work."@en1
