"Mr President, I had hoped to speak to highlight the case of María Corina Machado today, but I now focus on the comments made by the Venezuelan Ambassador at the Mercosur delegation yesterday where he stated that Leopoldo López was guilty of a range of offences and then said he would receive a fair trial. The absurdity of that, the sign that the chance for a fair trial is fading away in Venezuela, was crystal clear. The regime was exposed from its own lips, and the antics of this regime, the ‘Vos No Sos’ and talking to little birds, would be comic were it not for the serious human rights abuses and impoverishment of its people that are taking place.
As for the ludicrous comments made by the far left here today about respect and neo-colonialism, I simply have to say this: shame on you for those shameful comments."@en1
