"In my written question () that I submitted to the European Commission on 3/9/2014, I questioned the Commissions’ view on recognition for Somaliland. On 4/10/2014 the Commission replied stating:
‘The EU does not have the competency to recognise states, only individual member states do.’
In its capacity as an EU institution, the European Parliament does not, therefore, have the ability to deal with the question of recognition of any state. I believe that this resolution is inadmissible and, accordingly, I voted against it.
However, I wish to clarify that I support a lasting and viable two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, but this must be built on trust and non-violence. Accordingly, until Hamas revokes its call for the destruction of the Israeli State, I cannot support recognition for Palestine."@en1
