"I welcome the emphasis placed by this motion on the threat posed to the safety of people and communities across Europe by radicalisation leading to terrorism and the increasing dynamics of cross-border criminality. While this focus is right and proper, however, it should not be seen in any way, shape or form as a means to replace or integrate the sovereign actions of Member States and their armed forces in protecting citizens. Despite this, there does remain a role for EU to play in several aspects of security policy. First of all, Europe must encourage national governments to implement all crucial crime-fighting resources that they have at their disposal. In my own constituency, for instance, nationalist parties have prevented the successful National Crime Agency from tackling terrorism and organised crime in Northern Ireland. This is disgraceful and provides a safe haven for launderers and traffickers alike. The EU also has a role, given freedom of movement, to aid the detection of individuals that seek to further extremist causes or lead trafficking rings. Effective cooperation is key to this battle."@en1
