"Mr President, looking at the agenda of this week’s Council, it would return to the same old themes of growth and jobs. It is as if things get discussed over and over again and nothing ever happens. Spain still has over 50% youth unemployment; France’s economy is tanking; and Greece, quite frankly, just needs to leave the euro to get its economy moving again. And of course, another round of hot air from Europe’s great and good – or indeed bad, if you listen to normal people – will not solve anything. The central feature of the agenda is Mr Juncker’s investment plan, with which, somehow, he will magically turn EUR 21 billion into EUR 315 billion. Well, to get into the festive spirit, this reminds me of the classic Pogues song ‘Fairytale of New York’, because what we are witnessing today is the fairytale of Strasbourg. Now, Mr Juncker, I know you like a drink. I know you like a cigarette, but I do hope that you are a betting man too or, to use a British phrase, you like a flutter on the horses. If you do, I have come up with a more realistic plan for you to increase your money 15 times over. At Ludlow racecourse today at 15.00, a race called the European Breeders’ Fund is taking place. There is a perfect horse running for you, and it is pricing at 15/1. It is called ‘Dream’. Alternatively, there is another running at Tampa tonight. It has got an even better name, and I think you should go for it: it is called ‘Super Fantasy’. Now, there is a serious point to all this, Mr Juncker, because your investment plan is an economic dream based on super fantasy economics. The Commission has described the funds forecast leverage as, I quote, ‘prudent estimates from historical experience’. Well, you can excuse me if I say: we do not believe you; because these are the same eurocrats who told us ten years ago that the euro would bring us growth and jobs. Mr Juncker, Europe is sinking under global competition, and the European Union is not the answer. Unfortunately for the European people, your investment plan is the biggest turkey on the table. And on that festive note, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas!"@en1
