"I co-authored this resolution that calls for the international community to play a greater and more strategic role in combating the Ebola virus outbreak, and encourages the European Commission to continue to increase its financial commitment to humanitarian aid. The response from the EU and Member States has not been swift enough, and there is an urgent need to prevent the spread of the virus. The World Health Organisation has estimated that over 20 000 people could be infected by Ebola within a few months, and shortages of food and water are expected to continue. This resolution therefore calls for the Commission to begin country-by-country assessments of the Ebola risk, and help to coordinate the international response to this crisis. Labour MEPs have voted for this resolution because we believe the international response to Ebola has been inadequate so far, and a coordinated, well-funded, strategic response is overdue."@en1
