"Madam President, almost a quarter of young people today in Ireland are unemployed and the figure would be much higher if we took into account those who have been forced to emigrate. Those who do manage to find work are often expected to accept precarious or part-time work which suits the profits of employers but little else. They are faced with the dire option of emigration or unemployment and many young people are being utterly exploited in the name of so-called ‘flexible working conditions’.
We must provide our youth with real options for their career and properly paid apprenticeships which give an equal benefit to both parties. If we are to address youth unemployment seriously, then we need a properly considered and funded Youth Guarantee which will protect our young people against the worst effects of this crisis."@en1
