"Mr President, I supported this proposal on the free movement of workers, which is of course the cornerstone of the common or internal market, ensuring the equal treatment of non-national workers and national workers with regard to employment, remuneration and other conditions of employment. However, having something on the statue book and ensuring its full implementation are two entirely different things, and that is why the Commission came forward with this enforcement directive. Coming from a country with a long history of workers either choosing to leave or having to leave in order to gain employment – and also, in the early part of this century, a country which welcomed many immigrants from other Member States – I certainly – and we certainly – know the need for ensuring the proper enforcement of EU legislation on equal treatment. This applies both to workers who go abroad seeking to find employment – they often find themselves in a vulnerable position – and, from a national perspective, to workers at home, because that prevents social dumping and a race to the bottom."@en1
