"I drafted this resolution objecting to the Commission’s proposal to extend mandatory country-of-origin labelling for fresh meat. I am fully in favour of country-of-origin labelling for both fresh meat and meat in processed foods, but I was disappointed to see that the Commission’s proposal did not go far enough. Under the proposed rules, meat labelling would have to indicate only the countries where the animal was reared and slaughtered, not the country where it was born. Consumers need full information on the provenance of their food to enable them to make informed decisions, and knowing where an animal was born is essential if consumers are to be allowed to make decisions based on animal welfare or environmental concerns. Full country-of-origin labelling is already mandatory for beef so I am glad that MEPs supported my call for the Commission to re-think this proposal and require that all fresh meat be labelled to show the places of birth, rearing and slaughter."@en1
