"I am pleased that the Socialists and Democrats were successful in pushing for binding targets in this report, which sets out an ambitious framework for climate and energy. This own-initiative report highlights Parliament’s priorities in relation to climate change and clean energy policy. I am pleased that targets for a 40% reduction in greenhouse gases and the inclusion of 30% renewables in the energy mix, as well as an energy efficiency target of 40% by 2030, were adopted. Investing in renewables and low carbon technology is vital if we are to reduce our dependency on imported fossil fuels.
I hope that these measures will help UK industry and create jobs across the UK over the coming years. I am disappointed that Tory MEPs voted to water down the proposals: this once again highlights the differences between UK Government policy and the position taken by Tory MEPs on climate change and sustainable energy."@en1
