"I welcome this own-initiative report which highlights some of the challenges currently facing the European steel industry. Over the past few years around 65 000 jobs in the steel industry have been lost, including hundreds in my consistency in Wales. I welcome the Commission’s action plan for the steel industry which aims to prevent further relocation of steel outside Europe. I agree with suggestions in the report that the Commission, Member States, trade unions and industry should work together to attract qualified workers into the industry and I believe using apprenticeship schemes would be an effective way of doing this. The report also highlights the effect that rising energy prices have had on the competitiveness of the steel industry and I support remarks made to underline the importance of the single energy market in relation to this. The steel industry provides over 350 000 direct jobs and several million in related industries. We need to be looking at new ways in which to boost investment in the steel sector, to make it more competitive and to ensure the protection of workers in this industry."@en1
