"Madam President, the crisis of homelessness is a graphic illustration of the fact that Europe is moving rapidly in the wrong direction in terms of the conditions of the people. On any given night, up to half a million people are homeless, and that figure is on the rise: in France it is up 50 % since 2001; in Portugal and Spain, up 30 % since the start of the crisis; in Greece, up; in Ireland, homelessness in Dublin is said by some estimates to have trebled over the past year.
There are multiple reasons for homelessness, no question about that, but let us name one fundamental underlying cause: it is the austerity proposed and supported by the Commission and governments all across Europe, resulting in declining income, in evictions (as in Spain), and in the dismantling of social support. Saying that the right to a home is a real right means saying that it takes priority over the rights of the bankers and the landlords to profiteer: it means investing in shelters, in homes and in forms of social support."@en1
