"While we recognise that there are disparities between welfare entitlements for the self-employed and those for other workers, we do not believe it is the role of the EU to act in this area. There must be better recognition that national security systems are a Member State competence.
Additionally, we are concerned about the implication in this text that anything other than permanent full-time employment is of low value. In Britain, the existence of a flexible and responsive labour market is one of the key reasons why we have seen 1.4 million new jobs created since May 2010.
This report also fails to recognise the value of entrepreneurship and self-employment – we must remember that SMEs and micro-enterprises are the driving forces of the EU economy. While we support Member States’ efforts to challenge and combat undeclared work and other abuses or forms of non-compliance, these must be distinguished from new forms of legitimate employment, which often reflect personal choices, e.g. to balance family care or study. That is why my Conservative colleagues and I voted against this report."@en1
