"This is an extremely important debate, because we are talking about LIFE. In many ways it is a good name, because we could be talking about life or death in terms of the way we treat our environment, in particular, and especially how we adapt to the changes in the climate. So we are talking here about a project which has been on-going for twenty years and which, by and large, has been extremely successful. I welcome its continuation into the future.
There are aspects which people would be concerned about, and one is the very small budget for it: 0.3% of the budget is a little low for something which can have such a great impact on the environment and indeed on the quality of people’s lives. One thing that does intrigue me relates to the figures here in the notes on the success of Natura 2000 in general. It speaks about generating EUR 200 to 300 billion, and there is a big difference between EUR 200 and EUR 300. Then it talks about generating 4.5 to 8 million jobs. Now again there is a huge difference between 4.5 and 8 million jobs, so we would need more accurate figures in that regard.
However, I do support the proposals made by the rapporteur, especially in relation to integrated projects, as well as to giving workshops and help to new applicants based on the experience of successful projects. That is a very good idea which should probably be implemented on a wider scale regarding European projects.
Finally, I just want to say in relation to Ireland that there is an issue relating to bogs...."@en1
