"Mr President, first of all, compliments to the Commissioners and indeed the rapporteurs – who are too numerous to mention – for their really hard work in bringing about the best possible conclusion, given the circumstances in which we find ourselves and the reduced budget.
For me, one of the most uplifting aspects of travelling through the European Union is seeing the EU insignia with the words ‘funded by the European Union’ at railways, ports, airports and motorways right across Ireland and, indeed, across Europe. Of course this needs to continue, particularly in areas of cohesion. What is also pleasing about this is that it fits in with the 2020 strategy on which we are going to be judged post-2020, especially as regards providing 20% to fight poverty and trying to provide jobs for those who are poor because they have no jobs. There is also the commitment to lower-carbon technologies, which fits in with our targets to reduce CO
emissions again.
I would also like to see a particular emphasis on developing technology parks and research facilities, because this will be the key to providing new companies with opportunities to develop and to dealing with the unemployment crisis.
Finally, in my own country, particularly in relation to cross-border bottlenecks, I would like to see refunding for the Narrow Water Bridge between Louth in Southern Ireland and Down in Northern Ireland. This has been withdrawn, but hopefully it can be resubmitted."@en1
