"Mr President, the votes tomorrow on reformed funding are profoundly important for Northern Ireland. European Structural and Investment Funds in Northern Ireland have been a valued contribution to public programmes over the funding periods. Under the reform, Northern Ireland has been classified as a ‘transition’ region from 2014 to 2020, a period which will further enhance the efforts to improve competitiveness and create sustainable employment.
Northern Ireland must draw down as much of this EU funding as possible in support of our innovative businesses, SMEs and urban areas, particularly in such a difficult economic climate. The reform of EU cohesion funding therefore has great potential in this regard.
I must give particular recognition to the continued support for the Peace Process through the successive Special Support Programmes for Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Border Region of the Republic of Ireland, continuing in 2014-2020. I am pleased that we have secured EUR 150 million. We would have liked more but we are very pleased with what we have received."@en1
