"The Commissionʼs economic forecast for the next two years does not make pleasant reading for Europeʼs young people. Unemployment rates are projected to remain in double figures until 2015, with levels amongst young people even greater as employers continue to retain, rather than hire new staff. I am delighted therefore to vote for the Erasmus+ programme for the years 2014-2020, which increases opportunities for students, apprentices and volunteers working and studying abroad. The streamlined organisation of the EUR 14 billion programme simplifies access to funding hitherto spread over numerous programmes like Comenius and Leonardo da Vinci. Erasmus+ will also fund scholarships for non-university students, ensure grants are paid faster, and introduce sport into a European funding programme. Although unemployment rates have marginally declined in my own constituency, youth unemployment remains at an unacceptably high level in Northern Ireland and across Europe. We as legislators should do all we can to provide opportunities for our young people to better equip themselves with the necessary skills in a difficult economic climate. I believe the Erasmus+ programme has the potential to benefit not only students and volunteers, but also the wider economy when these newly acquired attributes enter diverse and highly-skilled labour markets."@en1
