"Madam President, I strongly welcome the fact that the Connecting Europe funding agreement will finally be voted on this week. However, it is a shame that Member States massively cut this funding scheme, as proposed by the Commission, for energy, transport and telecommunications infrastructure, as these are concrete instruments for jobs and growth. It is also a shame that Member States could not agree on a budget for growth focused on smart investment and smart spending, because investment in infrastructure is essential for connecting Europe better and is vital not only to boost the single market but also for millions of European citizens and businesses.
The United Kingdom, as an export-orientated nation, will benefit not only from investments on its territory – the High Speed 2 rail route is included, although I have to say that the Tories have kept very quiet about this – but also from better interconnection with and within continental Europe. A business needs to move its goods from A to B across Europe in the most efficient and sustainable way. We can achieve that, for the environment and for our economy, only as the United Kingdom in Europe, and by being part of the Connecting Europe scheme."@en1
