"Mr President, I will not be congratulating anybody, because what is Erasmus? It is simply a glorified student exchange programme which we could do without the existence of the EU. United Kingdom universities have numerous exchange programmes all over the world without needing to be in a political union. Erasmus is not really about educational excellence is it? You get to cynically use young people to further your political aims.
Amendments 42 and 78 say that the programme is aimed at supporting the EU’s external action and should promote European values – that says it all, doesn’t it? You want a greater European identity in sport and a call for a European Sports Day so inevitably that logo is going to be on our sports shirts. You call for the fast-tracking of visas to promote labour mobility. What you mean is that we must have an open-door immigration policy, and I have just heard a Conservative MEP support that.
Finally, you want 40% of 30 to 34 year-olds to have completed higher education, so we can assume the Lib Dems will be voting for higher tuition fees again. And look at the cost of it: EUR 17.2 billion!"@en1
