"All too often, innocent people in my constituency, Northern Ireland, have had to bear incalculable pain and suffering wrought by the relationship between organised crime and terrorism. Recent efforts to combat serious crime in Northern Ireland – and particularly fuel laundering – have been stalled by the willingness of Nationalist and Republican politicians to block the National Crime Agency (NCA) from operating in our region of the UK. This approach has been motivated by self-interest, and must change fast. The Committee’s report does contain several positive elements. Its proposed action plan prioritises stemming the rise in human trafficking and cigarette smuggling. It also aims to tackle new offences relating to cybercrime and the spread of banned legal highs. This is positive. I am, however, discouraged by the report’s fascination with harmonising tax provisions and creating a European Public Prosecutor. Member States must retain full sovereignty in these areas and I trust that the UK Government will continue to ensure that this is the case moving forward. I have therefore abstained on the report."@en1
