"A Uachtaráin, ní den chéad uair é go bhfuilimid ag caint faoin ábhar seo agus is ceart dúinn é a dhéanamh mar tá coiriúlacht de gach saghas ag déanamh díobháil mhór d’eacnamaíocht na hEorpa agus don daonlathas féin. Dá bhrí sin is fiú dúinn troid ar ais anois.
Mr President, as speakers have said, organised crime has gone beyond the limits in Europe. It is the new warfare and, like wars of old, we have got to organise ourselves to fight against it. There are 3 600 organised crime gangs working very lucratively within Europe. And why would they not? As Bill Newton Dunn pointed out, when only five per cent of containers are examined, there is a 95 % chance of escaping. Obviously we need to do something about that. We particularly need to utilise cooperation across all Member States – particularly at police level. We also need to utilise new technologies, such as the Internet of Things, to ensure that containers are examined and to put an end to this scourge, particularly where human trafficking, which people have mentioned already, is concerned. This is an appalling vista at this point in time.
I also think that we should consider having another headline figure for our 2020 strategy, namely to aim to reduce the amount of organised crime by 20 % by 2020. If we did so, we would make billions for the European economy and create countless jobs for our people."@en1
