"While I welcome this Regulation, which was a result of the French breast implant scandal, I would warn against ‘knee-jerkʼ legislation which may hinder medical progress. That is why I welcome the referral of this report back to committee. Protection of consumers is paramount. Medical devices are a very large employer in Ireland, employing 25 000 people in total. My constituency, particularly Galway, is very dependent on this industry and it was therefore very important that this report not place unnecessary barriers on manufacturers. This is a highly sensitive and technical area. I welcome the opportunity to dedicate further time to this report to ensure that we get the balance right – essentially we need to guarantee the highest level of consumer protection, but also avoid placing unnecessary burdens on manufacturers, many of whom in Ireland are indigenous companies, or slowing down new life-saving products from making it to the market! Both Ireland and the EU need to protective their innovative edge. Currently, Europe has a competitive advantage over the US due to the speed with which companies can develop products."@en1
