"The unacceptable practice of systematically killing people belonging to a particular sex is rooted in traditional son preference, discrimination and stereotypes, gender inequality, as well as coercive government policies. Gendercide is not only a terrible crime and a severe violation of human rights, but the gender imbalance that arises as a consequence affects long-term social stability, leading to frustration and violence, the rise of trafficking, sex slavery and rape cases. Combating this awful practice demands a fundamental change in the mindset of affected populations, in their attitudes towards women and tackling harmful gender-based practices in general. The European Union in its external relations must enforce respect for women܀s rights and promote the clear categorisation of gendercide as a crime. Furthermore, the economic, educational and political empowerment of women is necessary, as well as the introduction of strict rules for clinics and hospitals in order to prevent sex selection."@en1
