The subject I want to briefly comment on tonight is the difference in price paid to Irish cattle producers at the factories, compared to in Britain.
Just to indicate, Bord Bia, which represents the Irish industry, estimates that there is EUR 350 per animal of difference between what is paid to an Irish producer and what is paid to a British producer, and that this has increased exponentially over the years.
In 2008 there was 10 cents per kg difference between the price paid to the Irish producer as opposed to the British producer, in 2011 it was 14 cents and in 2013 it is 41 cents. So I think we have to look at the reasons for this and we particularly need to see if there is a cartel in operation and to do something about it, because this cannot be tolerated and is most unfair to the Irish producers."@en1
