"Madam President, youth unemployment is one of the biggest challenges facing Member States. Only by growing our economies and encouraging new business will we see youth unemployment really coming down.
Today Jaguar Land Rover, a major employer in my region of the West Midlands, announced the creation of 1 700 new jobs at its Solihull factory. This is fantastic news and gives young people in my region great hope.
It is so important to develop an entrepreneurial culture and an environment that is conducive to starting a business. Many young people have great ideas and great ambition and we must encourage them. We must recognise also that some will fail: there is a saying, you know, that someone who has never made a mistake has never made anything.
Now, Member States, including my own, have put in place comprehensive initiatives, including expanding apprenticeships and investing in training, to help get young people into the labour market. The British Government has committed about GBP 1 billion as part of a new youth contract. And recent figures in the UK show that in three months the number of young people unemployed reduced by 43 000.
Training which responds to real market need, coupled with an open and dynamic business environment, must be the key to reducing youth unemployment."@en1
