"Mr President, if you look around the world at the areas where the European Union is striking out a distinctive foreign policy position, separate from the rest of the Western world, the most outstanding is the decision to lift the arms embargo on Beijing. It trumps the decision to fund Hamas, the decision not to deal with the anti-Castro dissidents in Cuba and the decision to engage with the ayatollahs in Iran.
Those weapons are wanted by Red China for a purpose; they would be used. The idea that we have taken the decision in principle, even if we have not yet shipped any arms, to arm that regime against our allies, against those countries which have done the right thing and reformed their democratic and economic system, I think is a shame upon this Chamber."@en1
