"It is important that the Member States of the EU should be as well equipped as possible to deal with cross-border health threats as they arise, which is why I voted in favour of this resolution that will help strengthen the EU’s ability to cope with serious epidemics. The most positive aspect of this new law is the possibility for Member States to buy vaccines jointly. This will not only improve chances of recovery from illness by improving access to vaccines but also make pricing fairer and avoid a repeat of the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic, which saw Member States in competition with each other to buy vaccines that were available only in small quantities, meaning that some smaller Member States were priced out of the market. Furthermore, the EU will now have the authority to declare a ‘public health emergency’ in order to authorise the release of vaccines needed to combat large-scale health crises, whereas before it was necessary to wait for the WHO to declare their position. Overall, these new regulations will allow for a more cooperative, sensible and, above all, safer approach to international health threats."@en1
