"Mr President, Turkey needs its friends right now. No-one on either side of this debate should be taking any pleasure in the events going on in so many Turkish cities. I think we can all see in hindsight that there has been bad behaviour on both sides. Everyone now accepts that the initial police reaction was excessive. The Government has apologised for it. Equally, among the good and honourable protestors are a number of people who have been destroying property and have been advancing an agenda which has nothing to do with the protest.
If the European Union is to play any positive role in the events now shaking that old ally of ours, we should be irenic, trying to spread peace, tranquillity and dialogue. I am afraid that a number of the speeches we have had, just now and in yesterday’s debate, are doing the opposite. They are inflaming passions and seeking to exacerbate an already difficult situation.
This is not an Arab Spring. This is not an uprising. It is offensive to liken this government in Turkey, which is without question democratic, to neighbouring autocracies. There will be free and fair elections in ten months’ time. That makes violent protest unjustifiable."@en1
