"Mr President, of course a number of speakers have spoken about the country-by-country reporting element of these two directives. However, having worked on this in the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) and in another committee at the time, it is quite clear that a number of other issues were involved.
One of the things that we tried to do in the ECR was to highlight the role that accounting standards play in the whole debate, to make sure that there is more transparency when it comes to accounting standards, and to highlight some of the concerns around IFRS accounting standards. When they look at the balance sheets of banks and financial institutions, investors can be quite unclear about what is actually on those statements. When they are handling financial instruments, for example, they can book the profits up-front without making sufficient provision for losses. If we can get that right, then perhaps investors will have more confidence in the financial statements not just of financial organisations, but others too. Hopefully that is something we can work on, on a cross-party basis, in this Parliament."@en1
