"Madam President, one of the very important issues in international trade discussions at the moment is the role of intellectual property rights, but also I think here in the EU we have to look at the whole debate on intellectual property rights. We have some of these rights going back to the days of pure paper; we have issues such as whether we should extend copyright or not, and whether, as artists live longer, they have the right to continue to enjoy the fruits of their labour. There are others who say that, actually, sometimes intellectual property rights inhibit innovation, and that if you want to be able to create something and not have those rights, you should be allowed to do so.
What we need to do is make sure that we create the right environment where all those systems can coexist peacefully. But at the same time we have to recognise that in international trade agreements there will be some of our trade partners who want tougher IPR; we saw that over the whole debate on ACTA, and we are going to see it in the EU-US agreement. As long as we can get some sort of mutual understanding and recognition, hopefully we can resolve this issue."@en1
