"The Giegold report provides for a variety of provisions relating to banking supervision which I was happy to endorse. However, I support a delay in its adoption. It forms a key part of Parliament’s input to the establishment of the Single Supervisory Mechanism, and the role of the European Banking Authority (EBA) therein. Notably, it calls for the implementation of a single supervisory rulebook, which is a logical step in the current drive to simplify and overhaul supervisory and regulatory mechanisms. The rapporteur, Mr Giegold, is quite right to observe that ‘the ECB needs to get used to democratic accountability,’ and many of the provisions in his report sent a correct signal in that direction. Finally, I echo the calls of some MEP colleagues for this House to be very sensitive in ensuring that non-euro zone countries do not have any reason to feel that they are being left out of the system."@en1
