"The fight against tax evasion is of course a pressing issue, but I was unable to back this entirely non-binding report because I do not think it presented a coherent framework for tackling tax avoidance and in some cases could even have made things worse. Many of the ideas contained in this report infringe vital Member State sovereignty and would not in fact solve the problem. Companies taking advantage of different jurisdictions to minimise their tax bill is often facilitated by individual jurisdictions, and the only solution to this is for the Member States, and others, to cooperate. For some politicians to present this issue as a straightforward matter that is simply solved misleads the public and hinders progress towards finding a solution to this pressing issue."@en1
