"The recent EU ban on olive oil jugs and dipping bowls shows how out of touch and discredited the European Union is. It also shows how wasteful the EU is with its time and efforts, by interfering in areas in which it has no business. State pensions are an area in which the EU has no competence. And given the mess that the EU is making of the so-called Solvency II proposals, which are affecting private pensions, it ought not to be interfering in financial services either. The European Union needs to understand the limits of its competences. It needs to stop putting forward unnecessary – and in some cases downright silly – proposals which only serve to further alienate the general public at a time when trust in the EU is at an all time low. Instead of telling people how to eat their olive oil, the EU might do better by buttering up its citizens."@en1
