"Mr President, if it is any consolation, what I am about to say has not yet been said in today’s debate at least.
I shall make two comments. The first concerns fossil fuels and the recent interest at EU level in hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, for shale gas. Last week in Parliament we heard figures which indicated that shale gas would account for only 2-3% of the EU’s requirements. Therefore, it would not make economic sense if the EU were to pursue an energy policy with shale gas as one of its main planks. Instead, I believe we need to focus on renewables.
My second point is that, while renewables are crucial to the future of our energy mix, I have a concern about onshore wind energy. Wind turbines must be sited at adequate and safe distances from private homes, schools etc. Adequate distances would be 500 metres where the turbine is 50 metres in height, increasing in steps to about 2 000 metres where the height of the wind turbine is greater than 150 metres. This is crucial to protect citizens from noise and shadow flicker."@en1
