"The last two decades have witnessed an unprecedented growth in air travel. Indeed, Heathrow Airport in my London constituency is at full capacity, reportedly servicing 70 million passengers per year. I am therefore delighted that the EU and Eurocontrol have agreed upon a general framework for enhanced cooperation in the field of air navigation. Crucially, extended cooperation will serve to accommodate increasing air traffic flows, whilst improving performance. During a time of economic hardship across the European Union, inefficiencies must be reduced and with Eurocontrol reporting extra costs of around EUR 5 billion per year due to inefficiencies in Europe’s fragmented airspace, I am confident that enhanced cooperation will also facilitate significant savings. I am also certain that this agreement will go far to aid the successful implementation of the Single European Sky."@en1
