"I welcome the many sections of this report that challenge the hegemonic neo-liberal notion that unfettered trade liberalisation automatically results in reduced poverty and economic development. However, I abstained on this report as many of the positive contents were voted down by the majority of MEPs, such as the highlighting of the harmful nature of the reciprocity principle in public procurement, the call on the Commission to dispense with the requirement that ACP countries abandon export restrictions and a call for binding CSR clauses in bilateral trade agreements. The report supports the GSP reform, is not critical enough of EPAs and public private partnerships are welcomed. The EU’s trade policy defends EU-based multinationals using their dominant position to maximise profit at the cost of workers’ rights, the environment and the development of poorer countries. I stand for trade policies that are based on genuine partnership, where, on the basis of the democratic public ownership and control of the world’s resources and the planning of the economy, the world’s wealth can be used for the benefit of the vast majority of the population and not the profit of a few."@en1
