"Asbestos is a highly dangerous material, and I fully recognise and sympathise with efforts to combat the carcinogenic health risks associated with exposure to this toxic material. However, asbestos presents a great challenge as it is such a widespread and commonly used material. Nevertheless I wholeheartedly agree that strong actions must be taken to limit the serious health risks from exposure to asbestos. As a pragmatist, however, I also recognise that EU legislation in this area would place a considerable burden on businesses in the UK. Rather than the creation of new and likely inefficient legislation, I support a proactive, non-legislative approach to the problem. We must improve awareness and educate employers and workers on the dangers of asbestos. By advising employers on how to comply with existing legislation, we could increase the effectiveness of standing measures without unnecessarily encumbering businesses. The risks associated with asbestos must be addressed with strong actions, but this can be achieved through a practical, proactive approach."@en1
