"As most of us are well aware, spirits can be quite enjoyable, but also quite dangerous. People produce, trade, and partake in spirits across Member States. Although they have much to offer economically and socially, spirits must be well regulated to prevent abuse. But this must be done in a practical manner. The proposed definition of ‘absinthe’ into the Spirit Drinks Regulation is not in line with traditional production methods, which could detrimentally affect the industry. Furthermore, the minimum level of thujone stipulated by the definition contradicts efforts to remove this potentially harmful substance altogether from this spirit drink. There is a counter-argument that this definition would not pose any potential health risks to consumers. Along with this, the benefits of introducing a Single Market definition would harmonise the industry. In this lucrative and widespread business, proposals for regulations must be carefully considered with both the producers and consumers in mind."@en1
