"Madam President, last week in Parliament I had the honour of hosting a major science conference called ‘Global Science, Global Collaboration’, where we had over 1 200 delegates from around the world. One of those who attended was a lady by the name of Barbara James, the foremost venture capitalist in Africa. Venture capital is absolutely vital and if what Vicky Ford said a while ago is true, then it is time that we woke up in Europe and smelled the roses, as they say, because between 2003 and 2010 the US spent 131 billion on venture capital, and the European Union a paltry 28 billion. Is it any wonder we are at an uncompetitive disadvantage? This needs to be addressed as a priority. Thankfully, it has been taken on board here, because for businesses that are small, that are starting out, venture capital is what will make them successful, hopefully. We are going in the right direction."@en1
