"Madam President, I am pleased that level heads have prevailed and a sensible schedule for reducing sound levels has been adopted. Noise pollution is a serious issue which can lead to hearing damage, sleep disturbance and even cardiovascular disease. I believe it is in our interests to reduce sound levels of vehicles. However, we need to ensure that we do not cut limits too fast and too far. A gradual reduction of over seven years is a sensible approach which will both improve the quality of life for our citizens while ensuring the car industry has sufficient time to make the necessary changes.
I also voted for the amendments to include safeguards for the blind and partially sighted. While cars are too noisy and can be dangerous, cars that are too quiet can be equally dangerous. Introducing a sound generator on all quiet hybrid and electric cars can prevent thousands of collisions and protect vulnerable road users."@en1
