"Antimicrobial resistance is one of the most serious threats to public health worldwide – and tackling it is currently the single highest priority for the European Agencies working on medicines and disease control. Antimicrobial-resistant bacteria are estimated to cause about 25 000 deaths annually across Europe. I voted for this report because it advocates a coordinated, multisectoral policy approach. It calls for immediate concerted action, including legislation, and highlights key issues such as the prudent prescription of medicine for use with humans and animals; development of alternative treatments; and the need for the Commission to bring forward legislation to identify the most critical antibiotics for humans – and limit the use of these in the veterinary sector."@en1
