"We are only too aware in Wales of the need for the Maritime Safety Agency. The Sea Empress oil tanker disaster in the Milford Haven Waterway in 1996 spilt 72 000 tons of crude oil into the sea. The Pembrokeshire coast is one of the most sensitive marine conservation areas in Europe. It was the twelfth largest oil spillage in the world at the time and the effects were catastrophic. Most of the birds in the area died and the whole coast was contaminated by oil. I voted for this report because I strongly support extending the remit of the Maritime Safety Agency. With more powers to prevent as well as cope with the effects of environmental disasters like the one in Pembrokeshire, the Agency will become more effective. In addition to that, it would mean more training for seafarers and more coordination between neighbouring countries."@en1
