"Madam President, whilst we have heard tonight about avocado and asparagus this debate should focus on the fact that under this administration in Colombia there have been the assassinations of 243 social activists, 69 of them trade unionists; that despite an action plan from the Colombian Government, the United Nations says that impunity for these crimes stands at 95%; and that recently, this year, the Colombian Government has expanded impunity for the military, something which, contrary to what Mr Stevenson has said, has been criticised by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and UN rapporteur.
If the European Union and this Parliament do not use their trade powers now to leverage human rights in Colombia – which Amnesty International describes as the most dangerous country in the world in which to be a human rights defender – I do not know when we will.
Let us be clear: 250 human rights organisations, including Catholic bishops and aid agencies, Fédération Internationale des Ligues des Droits de l’Homme and the International Commission of Jurists, ask us to vote ‘no’. The European and international trade union confederations ask us to vote ‘no’. In paragraph 15 of our own Parliament resolution in April, we said we would only vote ‘yes’ if there was a binding mechanism for rights protection. Tell me, Mr David, how this has been achieved. And the crying shame is that those of us who have campaigned against this agreement care deeply for the future peace, prosperity and freedoms in a country that we love. I only wish that those who dismiss our arguments cared as much."@en1
